Background of the study
Translation accuracy in subtitling is a vital component of cross-cultural media communication, especially in the context of Nollywood films, where linguistic diversity is prominent. In Kano, the use of Hausa language subtitling plays a crucial role in making films accessible to a wider audience. However, the process of translating dialogues from English or other Nigerian languages into Hausa presents significant challenges. These challenges include semantic inaccuracies, cultural misinterpretations, and the loss of idiomatic expressions (Bello, 2023). Moreover, rapid dialogue pacing in films often pressures translators to prioritize speed over accuracy, leading to potential distortions in meaning (Garba, 2024). The background of this study is rooted in the need to critically assess how translation practices affect viewer comprehension and cultural authenticity in film subtitling. By analyzing a range of Nollywood films subtitled in Hausa, alongside feedback from audiences and translation professionals, this study aims to uncover systemic issues and propose improvements in translation methodologies. The research draws upon both qualitative and quantitative data to provide a comprehensive evaluation of translation accuracy in the subtitling process (Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite its growing importance, Hausa language subtitling in Nollywood films in Kano suffers from persistent issues of translation inaccuracy. Inaccurate translation of idiomatic expressions and cultural references has led to viewer confusion and misinterpretation of film narratives (Bello, 2023). Additionally, time constraints in the subtitling process often result in compromises on linguistic quality, thereby affecting the overall authenticity of the film experience (Garba, 2024). These translation deficiencies not only hinder effective communication but also potentially diminish the cultural value of the films. This study seeks to identify and analyze these challenges, focusing on how errors in subtitling affect audience engagement and cultural transmission (Ibrahim, 2023).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the translation accuracy of Hausa subtitling in Nollywood films, a key factor in cultural communication. Its findings will inform translators, film producers, and cultural policymakers on best practices to improve subtitle quality. Enhancing translation accuracy will not only improve audience engagement but also preserve cultural nuances in media productions (Bello, 2023; Garba, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating translation accuracy in Hausa subtitling for Nollywood films in Kano. It focuses solely on subtitling practices and does not address other translation mediums.
